Spinal Infection (Spondylodiscitis)
A spinal infection is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition involving the vertebral body, intervertebral discs, or surrounding soft tissues (like the epidural space).
Types and Locations
Vertebral Osteomyelitis: Infection of the actual bone of the vertebrae.
Discitis: Infection of the intervertebral disc space.
Epidural Abscess: A collection of pus in the space around the spinal cord and nerve roots.
Pott’s Disease: A specific term for spinal tuberculosis.
Causes and Risk Factors
Infections are typically bacterial (most commonly Staphylococcus aureus or E. coli) or fungal. They usually reach the spine via the bloodstream from another site, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or skin infection.
Risk Factors: Advanced age, intravenous drug use, diabetes, recent spinal surgery, or a compromised immune system.
